Lava River Cave in the Deschutes National Forest is a mile-long lava tube offering a unique underground adventure. Learn about access, closures, and what to bring for your visit.
Important Notice: Lava River Cave Closure
This location will most likely NOT be open in 2025 or the foreseeable future. The U.S. Forest Service has made significant cuts to its seasonal temporary workforce, the very boots-on-the-ground employees responsible for maintaining national forests. This decision, made to address a $750,000 payroll deficit for permanent year-round staff, has led to cost-saving measures of around $120-$150 million. These cuts affect essential services such as checking permits, maintaining facilities, and managing visitor experiences. This is part of a larger, nationwide issue impacting public access and resource care across the country.
