Live wildfire perimeters, smoke forecasts, and air quality conditions — the situational awareness layer for planning outdoor trips during fire season.
A front-end planning layer for active incidents and closure risk before you commit to the drive.
The important question is not just where the fire is, but where tomorrow's air will be worst.
This page frames the same logic later used by Pathfinder to compare open alternatives in smoke season.
During fire season, conditions change by the hour. The wildfire layer pulls active fire perimeters from NIFC and InciWeb, overlaying them with NOAA smoke forecasts so you can see where plumes are heading before they arrive at your destination.
Smoke can travel hundreds of miles from its source fire. A clear-sky destination today might be socked in tomorrow. The forecast overlay helps you make go/no-go decisions with better information than the view out your window.
AQI data from EPA AirNow sensors provides real-time readings at monitoring stations across the region. The map interpolates between stations to give you a general picture, but local conditions can differ — valleys trap smoke while ridgelines may stay clear.
Strenuous outdoor activity is generally not recommended when AQI exceeds 100 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups). Above 150, most people should reduce prolonged exertion outdoors. The map color-codes conditions using the standard EPA scale.
PNW fire season typically runs from mid-July through October, with peak activity in August and September. Trail closures, road blocks, and evacuation zones shift daily during active fires. Always check with the local ranger district before heading into areas near active incidents.
The Pathfinder integration will layer closure data on top of fire and smoke maps, giving you a single view of what is open, what is burning, and what the air looks like at your destination.
Pathfinder connects you to live conditions, permits, and access data for every location on the map.
