History and Geology
This trail takes you along an old logging railway built in the early 1900s by the Shevlin-Hixon Lumber Company, whose former logging camp stood at the parking area. The towering Ponderosa Pines surrounding the site were left untouched to host the company's annual picnic.
Geologically, the area tells a fascinating story. Nearly 7,000 years ago, lava flows dammed the Deschutes River, creating a lake that stretched as far as present-day La Pine State Park. Over time, the river broke through the natural dam, leaving behind the lush meadow and thick forest you see today. Evidence of this dramatic transformation is visible throughout the hike, making every step a journey through history.
